By 1909 the competition had caught up. Now it was hundreds of junks doing the Sumatra run for Indo Kratom, and most of them were not Foo’s.

He supplied a new expedition even further southwards. From the island of Bali, rumors went, came an even better Kratom. But this time Foo’s little fleet was less lucky: it was drawn into the notorious rivalries between Javanese and Balinese fiefdoms. Only one junk made it back and it carried nothing but a few samples of Bali Kratom. These Bali Kratom leaves however raised Foo’s highest hopes.

From his diary in 1910: “I have exchanged a fortune for nothing but a taste of paradise. Bitter it was, that taste, but what gorgeous effects! Just three leaves of Bali Kratom dissolved in plum juice, and it was as if my age had been reduced for a decade and as if I had just come back from a long vacation…”

Foo quickly equipped a second expedition for Bali Kratom, and this time with success. All junks returned after one year heavily loaded with Bali Kratom. Consequently Foo’s diary concluded 1911: “Next year I will make a fortune with Bali Kratom, and with Bali Kratom I will feel stronger, healthier and younger than ever before.”
